Welcome to Prarie Pi. This blog exists to journal and document the memories that our family experiences. Pi is "an amount of type that has been jumbled or thrown together at random." We hope to assemble in words and pictures the daily thoughts and activities that happen in our household. We do this to help those that are distant from us get a glimpse into our days so that the miles that separate us won't keep us apart.

Moe's Homework Buddy

This is Moe's room.
He likes to do his schoolwork at his desk.

He has recently aquired a new little buddy.

Can you see him?

Meet Pete......

Pete is Moe's fuzzy, black caterpillar that now resides in a cage on his desk.
We are feeding him leaves and waiting to see if there will be a cocoon soon.
We'll keep you posted......
Have a wonderful Thursday!!
We are getting ready for some week-end guests!

Feast of the Archangels

Happy Feast Day to our Lil Angel

"O God, Who in a wonderful order hast established the ministry of angels and of men, mercifully grant that, as Thy holy angels ever do Thee service in heaven, so they may at all times protect us on earth."
From the Roman Missal

"Make yourself familiar with the angels, and behold them frequently in spirit; for without being seen, they are present with you."
St. Francis de Sales

Little Climber

Coco loves climing on 4-wheel toys that are just her size.

The toys don't even need to go anywhere.

In fact, she prefers them stationary.

The more still they are, the better the maneuvering.

Mission Accomplished.
Here's hoping you accomplish the missions you set out to do today!

Sunset Jumping

This evening, we were outside enjoying the beautiful sunset. The air was cool, the kids were jumping on the trampoline and I could here the sound of geese flying somewhere close. I decided to capture the moment on camera........

....with my one goal of getting a picture of Buttercup and Moe as they played catch with the football while they were jumping......
....but, Nacho could sense that I was going for a particular shot and he just didn't want to be excluded.......

There always seemed to be a flash of orange somewhere in the picture.

"Hey, Nacho, I just want to get a picture of Moe and Buttercup playing catch real quick..."

"Oh, Ok sure....I'll get a picture of you."

"Yes, yes, I got your feet....those toesies are pretty cute."

"Yep, honey, I got you jumping, too."

....Holding my breath....

GOT IT!!!!
Hope you find a beautiful sunset to enjoy this week-end!!!
We have football and soccer games to go to.......

Mail Time

"Here's the mail,
it never fails,
it makes me want to wag my tail,
when it comes I want to wail, MAIL!"
We love...
going to the mailbox. It is fun to reach in and pull out a bundle of stacked papers to see what there is to read. Sports Illustrated and American Girl Doll magazines are big hits around here......but the biggest excitement comes when there is a letter!! Email is a great way to stay connected but there is nothing like getting a handwritten note all wrapped up in an envelope with your own name on it.
" We just got a letter....
We just got a letter....

We just got a letter....

I wonder who it's from?!"

And letters from friends and family are the very best kind to get!
Thank you and keep sending them!!

1st Day of Autumn

"Delicious Autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns."
George Eliot
Today, as we went off to get groceries, we spied these......

.....delicious pumpkins, so being the 1st day of Fall, we grabbed a few......
...... especially since they were at these delicious prices.

We will still go and explore a real pumpkin patch/apple orchard later in the month, but these pumpkins are a great start for the seasonal decorating that we love to do both inside and out and the kids are already planning the images that they will carve into them next month.

Have a delicious day!

Almost Autumn Days

Happy Last Day of Summer!
It's going to feel like summer around here.....high will be in the 80's.
This time of year brings about a certain pigskin ritual. For as long as I can remember the boys liking football, each fall they have made a field goal using a rope............and then the kicking begins.
Their favorite game is Field Goal HORSE.....they challenge each other to kick field goals from different points in the yard.

EXTRA POINT.....GOOD!!!!

We love the change of seasons, especially this time of year!!

Week-end Fun

HONK, HONK!!

Nacho's favorite part of the week-end....

...........was an event called "Touch a Truck." For 3 year-olds who like machinery........this was a jack-pot!! There were trucks upon trucks for him to climb into and explore.....and he did.......one after another after another.....

Hoping everything is "truckin' along just fine for you on a Monday!

Cruising Girls

Nacho's friend, who lives about a block away, often drives over to visit.....in his little, red car.

The girls had a chance to try it out.

Coco loved it......

...........so adorable, but will it be as cute 16 years from now?

Hope you "cruise" through a wonderful Thursday!

Fall Tree Trimming

We found out from a neighbor on Saturday that the city was providing a free tree branch pick-up on Monday. So, on Sunday, we became tree artists. Trimming here, cutting there. Mark looked like "Edward Scissorhands."
All of our trees needed some type of cutting action, so our branch pile grew to be pretty large.
I also managed to get Rocky a haircut that day.....like the trees, he was in need of a good trim.

By the end of the day, I felt like I could strongly identify with the book Mop Top, where the boy goes home after going to the barber and the world looks so much more clean cut and streamlined.
Two days later, the branches are still in the front ditch. Let's hope our neighbor was right, or we'll be buying some chocolate, marshmallows and grahams to go with a nice little bonfire that we will be making.

Grandfather's Wrinkles

Tonight, Buttercup and I went to our local library to meet Richard McFarland, the illustrator of the children's book Grandfather's Wrinkles.
This book is about a little girl who points to her grandfather's wrinkles and asks how he got each of them. The grandfather then explains to her that he received each wrinkle from different times in his life that he had great big smiles on his face.....such as his wedding day, the birth and marriage of his daughter and different memories from his life.......and his biggest wrinkle came the day that his grand-daughter was born.

We especially like this book because the illustrations of the little girl in the story look like Buttercup and the grandfather's daughter resembles me when I was a little girl and as an adult.

We received a signed copy. Mr. McFarland wrote in it to "Enjoy your wrinkles."
When I read the book to Buttercup tonight, she informed me that I had a few wrinkles when I smiled, so I guess that means I've had a few happy memories in my life!
Enjoy your wrinkles!!
